The coming war with Iran:

Tony Snowjob on Hillary Clinton's plan to put a cap on U.S. troop deployment and an eventual withdrawal from Iraq.

". . .It raises the question, in terms of the Iraqis, will they take us at our word when we say we support them? And will it, in fact, make it easier for suitors, whether they be Iranians or al Qaeda members to say, well, look, you can count on us, we're going to be around?" [Press Briefing 1/17/07]

Do I note a hint of conflation here? Before the war W. & Co. were always very sure to mention 9/11 and Saddam in the same breath, eventhough neither had anything to do with the other. Now, the WH narrative is that if we leave, al-Qaeda and Iran will move in to fill the vacuum.

Aren't they both antithetical to each other? Is this another case of people making policy decisions that don't know the difference between Sunnis and Shiites? Or is this a cynical attempt to play on the fear and ignorance of the American people again?
